Detoxification Time

It’s that time of the year again to get your body into shape and work off the New Year’s festivities. Too much food and drink put a stress on our digestive systems and liver leading to fatigue, bloating, skin problems and an exacerbation of all your existing health issues. Every six months is ideal to give your body a rest and restore balance again.

There are several steps to a simple cleanse.

Eliminate all alcohol, coffee and nicotine. These are the big 3 that many people over indulge and create the biggest stress on our bodies. The other dietary areas which need to be eliminated are wheat, dairy products, junk food and processed foods, meat and chicken. By eliminating each of these for 3 to 4 weeks will rest our detoxification systems such as the liver, kidney and bowels and allow them to focus on the stored toxins accumulated over a lifetime.

Once the bad elements are eliminated, fresh and wholesome foods need introduced which are high in dietary fibre and natural antioxidants. A diet which is largely vegetarian should be consumed focusing on fresh fruits for breakfast, salads for lunch and vegetables for the evening meal with the occasional fish for protein.

Vegetable juices play a key role in stimulating the body to cleanse itself. 500ml of fresh vegetable juice should be consumed across the day. Many different types of vegetables can be used, however a suggested base for taste should be carrot. Then blend greens such as celery, broccoli, cabbage, and Chinese vegetables. Beetroot is another good addition however only small amounts are needed. Ginger should also be added to improve digestion. Small amounts of fresh turmeric are also another great addition due to the high levels of natural antioxidants.

A range of symptoms may present during the cleanse as the body begins to detoxify. Initially headaches are the most common, particularly associated with caffeine withdrawal. These usually pass after a few days and as the body gently cleanses you will sleep very well and have a sense of euphoria. At some point the body may release a large amount of toxins when you start to break down fat stores. This may cause a temporary fatigue and headaches as well. The best way to avoid this is to ensure the bowels are moving regularly by consuming brown rice.

Exercise plays an important role by mobilizing toxins and encouraging sweating. Do not over exercise, however daily exercise is recommended. Brushing the body with a skin brush is also recommended to improve lymphatic circulation and stimulate blood flow to the skin which is known as the third kidney.

If you have any preexisting health conditions it is important to check with your doctor, however reducing harmful substances such as alcohol and nicotine combined with a healthy diet and exercise is never a bad thing. Enjoy yourself and your body will love you back with increased energy and a natural glow of health.

Sugar Addiction

We all love to have a little sugar however it is important to understand the health implications of too much sugar and refined carbohydrates. Diabetes, heart disease and weight gain are all directly linked to excessive sugar intake. Our bodies can manage small amounts of sugar, however in large amounts sugar becomes a poison.

Sugar is highly addictive. If you consume something sweet one day, then your body creates a physiological response to the sugar. If sugar is consumed regularly then the body will automatically reduce blood sugar levels in anticipation of the sugar high. This essentially is the sugar cravings people experience. Like any drug, the body requires more and more to obtain the same high. This is how a sugar addiction is created with a large percentage of society silently suffering from this addiction.

Elevated blood sugar levels then damage a range of organs and the circulatory system leading to the characteristic signs of diabetes and heart disease. The epidemic of diabetes is a symptom of the food manufacturing practices where sugar is added to almost all processed foods. The problem has become so large today that genetic weakness has developed in the children of diabetic parents, creating a strong family history of blood sugar disorders.

Here are some tips to cut down on your sugar intake which could save your life;

  • Make sure you have well balanced healthy meals so that you will not feel hungry between meals. Missing meals and trying to ‘diet’ will cause you to crave sweet foods.
  • Choose brown cereals rather than refined white ones. Brown bread and rice take longer to digest causing the blood sugar to not rise.
  • Sleep early. Late nights are often when people snack on sweets. A good night’s sleep also prevents low energy and sugar cravings through the day.
  • Sugar is highly addictive. If you eat sugar one day, your body will crave it the next. So avoid giving into the sugar cravings and the body will adapt in a healthy way and soon the sugar craving will stop.
  • Snack on a mix of nuts, seeds and dried fruits as a way to avoid sweet cravings. Dried fruits contain sugar; however it is much less harmful than refined sugar as the body can digest it better.
  • Cut down on tea and coffee if you have too much sugar. Use a natural honey as a sweetener instead of white sugar.
  • Exercise. Regular exercise helps to reduce blood sugar levels and encourages healthy sleep and natural weight control.
  • Reduce stress. Stress causes a rise in blood sugar resulting sugar cravings.
  • If you have sugar cravings take something bitter such as lemon or lime juice in water.

The simple truth to well being

vegie body

We often over complicate our health. Modern medicine has become extremely good at critical care, however it has very few systems in place to empower the individual to take care of their own wellbeing. Medicine has developed to cater for the demand of disease, rather than looking at sustainable health promotion.

The fundamental element that modern medicine has forgotten is the body’s ability to heal itself. When you take a plant and don’t give it the environment that it needs to survive, it will slowly become unwell and eventually dies if you do not give it what it needs. However if you take a sick plant and give it the correct sunlight, water and nutrition it will heal itself. Our bodies are exactly the same. They have the innate ability to heal themselves if you give them the correct environment.

Unlike a plant, humans have the ability to give our bodies the correct environment. It is our choice. Yet humans often release their responsibility of their health to the physician. This is fundamentally wrong and this attitude needs to change for any real shift towards sustainable health care.

Health is really very simple when we break down the essential elements. So what do you need for our bodies to heal themselves?

Good quality, clean water. Enough to keep your urine clear during the day. Our bodies are over 70% water and it is critical to maintain hydration. Avoid carbonated sweet drinks, alcohol and excessive coffee which all have a negative effect on health.

Good quality nutrition. This means having your food as close to how nature has provided us with. Avoid all the junk food which has been over processed. Often good nutrition is simple food. Lean meats, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. The greater a food has been processed, the less nutritional value and the harder it becomes to digest.

Be active. Unlike plants we need to move. A simple sign if you are moving enough is your weight. If you are overweight then either increase activity or reduce food intake focusing on consuming unprocessed foods.

A balanced mind leads to a balanced body. The best way to balance the mind is through the breath. Practice meditation and breath control to manage your mind. If your mind is consumed with stress, then a range of health conditions will manifest depending upon your state of health and genetic predispositions.

We often over complicate our lives and our health suffers as a result. Abandoning stress and leading a simple life in terms of diet and lifestyle will give your body the environment is needs to heal itself. This is the only form of medicine. Everything else is temporary. The body must be the physician otherwise you will find yourself in a never ending circle of painful symptoms as the body tries to restore wellbeing.

Metabolic Weight Loss Secrets

Metabolic Weight Loss Secrets

You are about to discover the two secrets to weight loss success that very few people know, yet affect most of the population. If you suffer from these imbalances and do not correct these simple metabolic processes then you will always find it difficult to lose weight and particularly fat from difficult areas.

The first metabolic activity that is inhibiting your weight loss is the body pH. That’s right, your acid and alkaline balance in the body has a large impact on whether you can lose weight easily or not.

The body tissue has an ideal pH range of 7.35 – 7.5. When the pH is higher than 7.8 or lower than 6.8, body cells and tissues stop functioning. Elevated acidity comes from a diet high in refined sugars, processed foods and junk foods.

But how does this affect how easy it is to lose weight? Firstly, as the body becomes more acidic, it sets up a defense mechanism to keep the damaging acid from entering into vital organs. The body does this by building fat deposits to protect organs. So while your system remains in an acid state you will always find it hard to lose weight.

Secondly, critical fat burning hormones such as leptins, insulin and thyroxine are inhibited when the body is in an acid state. They require a balanced pH to be active. Until your acid/alkaline balance is restored, your body will hormonally store fat. In other words your metabolism will stay slow while you have an elevated acid level.

The next metabolic condition is called Oxidation. A process that is critical to our survival, yet when excessive has a profound effect on your overall wellbeing and weight loss ability. Oxidation is basically rusting. Just like metal rusts in the environment, our internal organs are exposed to the same process of aging. Excessive oxidation is created from leading an unhealthy diet and lifestyle.

The higher the levels of oxidation in our bodies, the faster our bodies will age. The higher the level of oxidation, the more the body will create fat to protect itself from excessive oxidation.  Fat cells protect our bodies from acids and toxins. Increased levels of oxidation inhibit the very same hormones insulin, leptin and thyroxine which are used for weight loss.

When elevated levels of acidity and oxidation exist, the body will not want to lose the fat cells. It is a protective mechanism. Your fat is protecting your body from further disease associated with high levels of oxidation and acidity.

The simple cure to correct these metabolic imbalances is to improve your lifestyle and follow an alkaline forming diet high in plant based antioxidants. Apply these simple dietary principles in conjunction with a balanced exercise program and you will not only burn fat fast, but create the correct environment for your body to heal itself of a range of health problems. Sound familiar? Lead a healthy lifestyle, exercise and your weight will be balanced? Now you know the metabolic reason why following a healthy lifestyle is so important.

Healthy Brain Function

Healthy Brain Functionhomerbrain

We often take for granted our memory and brain function, however as aging occurs our brain function diminishes and needs to be kept in good health just like any other part of our body. With an aging population it is important to take steps to protect brain function and to prevent degenerative brain conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease currently affects approximately 5% of the population under 65% however estimates up to 45% of the population over the age of 85 are affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Although the causative factors of Alzheimer’s disease are vague, brain health obviously plays a large role in overall development of the condition as well as general memory degeneration.

The good news is there are many ways to keep the brain active and in good shape. The most important factor to keep the brain healthy is circulation. The brain has extensive microcirculation that is prone to plaque buildup in the same way as the heart. As brain circulation diminishes, so too does brain function.  Therefore, it is important to maintain a healthy diet which pays particular attention to avoiding unhealthy fats from junk foods and fried foods whilst at the same time consuming healthy fats from cold pressed oils, nuts, seeds and fish. Smoking is also a major contributing factor to reduced circulation within the brain.

Exercise for the brain comes in two forms. Traditional physical exercise is important to maintain healthy circulation, however exercising the brain with brain exercises is important. Keeping active mentally with interests, reading, crosswords and puzzles are excellent ways to keep the brain active. Several new applications exist to exercise the brain, which are based on memory and calculation exercises.

In addition to a healthy diet, exercise and keeping the mind active several natural medicines can be used to improve brain function. The most well know herbal medicines are Gingko Biloba, Brahmi, Gotu Kola and Ginseng which assist to stimulate brain function through improved circulation. Minerals such as zinc and magnesium have been shown to be important for brain function as have B vitamins. The amino acids tyrosine, carnitine and tryptophan can also be useful in stimulating brain function.

Interestingly caffeine has been shown to reduce the onset of Alzheimer’s disease in elderly over the age of 65. Two to three cups per day delayed the onset by up to 5 years. The mechanism is not well known, however the key seems to be related to the stimulatory effect on the brain.

Regularly stimulating the brain and maintaining good circulation are the most important factors in maintaining healthy brain function. So keep the brain active and in years to come you will benefit.   ‘If you don’t use it, you will lose it’.

Cervical cancer vaccine dangers

child-vaccine-condition-300x200Vaccination is a sensitive issue and debate around the safety and effectiveness of vaccines draw on emotional subjects of children’s health and cancer. The debate over the safety and effectiveness of vaccinations has recently come into the spotlight again with serious questions over the safety of the vaccination to prevent cervical cancer.

The lead researcher in the vaccine to prevent the human papilloma virus linked with cervical cancer, Dr Dianne Harper has publically commented on the side effects and put into question the rationale of the vaccine. At the same time Japan has withdrawn its recommendation for the vaccine due to several hundred adverse reactions. The effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing the sexually transmitted human papilloma virus is not in question after studies are showing dramatic reduction in the virus after mass immunization in the United States. The controversy lies in the reported side effects and potential deaths linked to the vaccine.

Reported side effects of the vaccine include convulsions, paraesthesia, paralysis, Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), transverse myelitis, facial palsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, anaphylaxis, autoimmune disorders, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolisms. To date worldwide, there have been 44 deaths linked to the vaccine. For healthy 9 year old girls these are serious side effects to consider before routinely having the vaccination.

Dr Harper questioned the need for the vaccine when; “About eight in every ten women who have been sexually active will have H.P.V. at some stage of their life. Normally there are no symptoms, and in 98 per cent of cases it clears itself. But in those cases where it doesn’t, and isn’t treated, it can lead to pre-cancerous cells which may develop into cervical cancer.”

In Japan an association of cervical cancer vaccination victim’s parents has been established to bring to the attention of authorities the potential dangers. The group is calling for the vaccinations to be halted. The authorities have listened to their concerns and have withdrawn the health ministry’s recommendation. “It is necessary to gather information immediately to accurately grasp how often (the side effects) are occurring,” said Mariko Momoi, who chairs the panel at the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry that decided to suspend the recommendation. Momoi is vice president of the International University of Health and Welfare.

Families should conduct as much research as possible before committing to any vaccination to be aware of the positives and negative implications which are often ignored.

Simple tips for more energy

Woman-with-Glowing-Heart-123RF-300x300Would you like more energy? Most people will say a resounding ‘YES’ yet tend to do everything in their lifestyle to reduce their energy levels and stress their bodies. The good news is there is a range of ways to keep you bouncing through the day.

It is important to look at the key factors which reduce your energy levels. All the traditional factors such as excessive alcohol, smoking and junk foods need to be taken into consideration, however it is often subtle influences that combine to reduce the bodies overall energy levels.

The digestive system has a huge influence on energy levels. Over 50% of the bodies available energy stores are used in the digestive process. Over eating is a major cause of fatigue. By consuming a 1/3rd less, energy levels will increase dramatically. Eating a large evening meal late in the night is also another way to reduce energy levels in the morning. Having a lighter evening meal at 6pm in the evening will increase energy levels the next day as you will sleep deeper and wake feeling refreshed.

It is important to understand that for every artificial energy high, there is an equal and opposite low. Caffeine and sugar both artificially stimulate the body’s energy systems. We feel energized for a short period of time, however then discover you are yawning and lethargic a short time later. If this cycle is repeated several times a day a habit is established and your body will expect these artificial stimulants during the day. If you skip a dose, then your body will go into withdrawal symptoms and cravings will occur. This rollercoaster effect also influences the bodies sleep cycle, further compounding the fatigue.

So what to do? Remove all the artificial stimulants as quickly as possible, keeping in mind the withdrawal process. Then replace the sugary foods with whole grains, nuts and seeds to give you lasting energy through the day. The next step is to start regular balanced exercise. As your fitness levels increase, the improved energy metabolism used for the exercise is available during normal daily activities. It is important to not over exercise though as this will have a draining effect on your energy stores. Regular daily moderate exercise is the key.

Sleep is the most critical element to having abundant energy through the day. Not just 8 hours sleep though, but deep restful sleep. Stimulants such as coffee and sugar, artificial colours and flavours, preservatives, and fatty foods can cause sleep to be restless and light. When people follow detoxification programs they often comment how deep and restful their sleep has become. Stress is another factor which causes disturbed and restless sleep. Try to relax with a book or do a meditation before going to bed to release the days stress.

If you follow these simple tips you will feel more energized, revitalized and ready to take on the world. The human body is always looking for balance. The key is to remove the factors which are creating the imbalance and health will return.
